Often when I travel, I get asked by friends and family to keep in touch. Sometimes it’s because they worry about my safety, sometimes it’s because they want to live vicariously through me, and sometimes it’s a little of both. However, if you know anything about me, it’s that I am bad with communicating one on one. After all, that is why I have a blog, one place to post my travel updates for everyone to see and I don’t have to keep track of a ton of conversations, repeating the same information over and over. Other times, like my train trip around the U.S. I give special attention to one person, mainly to keep myself entertained with being utterly ridiculous in the conversation. My friend Carl learned real quick that it was a mistake to ask for individual text updates of my trip.

It started normal…ish.

Carl didn’t give in quite yet.

I just wanted him to know I was on the train now and not a bus.

Carl starts to break loose and get weird.

I simmer down, 21 hours on a train will do that to a person.

We manage to continue a normal conversation for a few days.

Then something shook loose after the Rockies.

Carl then implies I smell?

Carl shows starts to show jealousy. I show zero sympathy.

We both start to get weird at the same time. Then Carl starts to point out the obvious.

I bet Carl is tired of my ridiculousness by this point.

I go back to my aggressive ways.

Carl tries to keep it normal. I do not comply.

Carl continues to point out the obvious.

I make it to my next stop.

Carl gets a great idea.

The drinking begins…

I think he is ready for the trip/messages to end.

Not yet Carl. Not Yet.

Things get weird… again.

These comments killed the conversation, until I returned home.

Since this trip, Carl has not asked for personal updates about my travel. I don’t really understand why.
